Newmarket Sole Support
What Is It
This two part Polysiloxane Putty is a fast, effective and economical way to provide immediate, individualised support to the pedal bone and hoof. It can be moulded or cut to offload specific areas and or to provide Inspection access.(Mitchell C.E. Fulger A.F. Eades S.C. Vet. Med. (Auckl.)2015:6;39-47. The management of acute laminitis.)
One pot of base and catalyst will provide sufficient material to support up to eight hooves.
Application
- Prepare the horse: Stand the horse or pony on a hard, flat, dry surface. If necessary, analgesics and a light plane of sedation should be given to ensure the horse is comfortable and willing to stand on affected limbs.
- Prepare the foot: Thoroughly clean and dry the hoof, remove any loose sole or frog. Support can be applied with or without shoes and before or after appropriate foot trimming at veterinary discretion.
- Estimate the amount of putty required: It will take between 2 and six scoops each of base and catalyst to provide adequate support, depending on foot size, the concavity of the sole, depth of collateral grooves or if it is shod.
- Mix the equal amounts of base and catalyst thoroughly: The putty should be kept between 15 and 22 degrees centigrade, this provides 4 to 7 minutes working time in which to mix it and apply it to the hoof. If kept in the boot of a car on a hot day it can set in under two minutes, conversely on a cold day if not warmed it may take over 20 minutes to set.
- NB NEVER WEAR LATEX GLOVES WHEN MIXING OR APPLYING. Latex interferes with the catalyst and stops the putty setting.
- Apply the mixed putty to the hoof: Create a ball of putty, apply this to the middle of the frog, press the putty into the frog sulcus and collateral grooves. Apply a sheet of smooth stiff cardboard ( the top of a trimediazine pack is ideal), then get the horse or pony to stand squarely on the foot and to stand quietly until the putty has set.
- Excess putty: This will ooze out mainly from behind the heels, it can either be removed and or moulded under the heel to provide additional palmar/plantar support.
- After setting: Remove the cardboard and ensure the sole support is adequate. If required, the putty can be trimmed at this point to remove focal pressure or to allow access points as determined on an individual case basis. The foot is the bandaged.
- Ongoing Care: The bandage and sole support should be removed and the hoof checked and cleaned every 3-5 days. The sole support can be removed and replaced several times. However, a new support should be moulded every 10 – 14 days and every time the hoof is trimmed.
- Assess response: The polysiloxane putty is firm enough to allow transfer of ground forces through the sole, bars and frog of the hoof, while also providing a cushioning effect. Most horses and ponies show an immediate improvement in their comfort standing and walking after Newmarket Sole Support has been applied correctly.
